How Do I Get Access to Mentimeter?
An important note
Please consult and carefully follow the instructions below in order to avoid unwanted issues. The seamless connection between your University of Bern account and the Mentimeter account can only be guaranteed this way! Access to Mentimeter is always via SSO. For more information on SSO, cf. "What is SSO?" on this page.
Step I (optional): Migration of an Existing Mentimeter Account
If you have not used Mentimeter before, you can skip this step. In case you already have either a private account or a business Mentimeter account from another institution which you want to migrate to the University of Bern Campus license, please follow the steps below:
- Log in your existing account and navigate to your account settings.
- Delete your current email address and replace it with your University of Bern email address (name.surname@unibe.ch).
- Log out and shut your browser.
Please note: As soon as you have changed your email address, any Mentimeter notification will be sent to your unibe-business email box.
Step II: Creation of a new University of Bern Mentimeter account
- Open the website https://myapplications.microsoft.com.
- Click on “add apps” and then on “request new apps”. You will be re-directed to a Microsoft Azure page that merely contains Mentimeter in the list of available applications.
- Select the smaller “UniBE – Mentimeter” logo at the left side of the screen and add it to your app dashboard by clicking on the add-button. If you are faced with an additional dialogue box asking you to confirm your selection, just click on the button at the bottom right end of the dialogue box.
The Mentimeter app has been successfully added to your Microsoft account and you can continue with Step 3.
Step III: Log in to Mentimeter.com
- Go to https://mentimeter.com/join/unibe and click on “Log in” at the top right of your screen.
Please note: For the initial login to Mentimeter, you might be asked to confirm your login to Mentimeter with SSO ("Confirm that you want to start signing in with SSO"). If this is the case, an email has already been sent to your University of Bern email box. Open this mail and click on the link ("confirm SSO login by clicking here"), which serves as confirmation. You should then be re-directed to Mentimeter. - If you are not re-directed to the login page, open https://mentimeter.com/join/unibe again.
- On the login page, ignore the prominently layouted options and click on the linked text “Log in with SSO” below the “Log in” button.
- On a new page, you are asked for the name of your organization. Enter “unibe”.
- If you have not yet logged into your University of Bern Microsoft Online account in your browser, you are redirected to the Microsoft login page. Here, enter your @unibe.ch-email address and your campus account password.
After successful login, you are redirected to your Mentimeter dashboard.
Troubleshooting
After the initial attempt to log in to Mentimeter, a frequently occuring error reads:
AADSTS50105: Your administrator has configured the application UniBE - Mentimeter ('49dc0bde-bae1-441f-8869-4b405a701b99') to block users unless they are specifically granted ('assigned') access to the application. The signed in user 'IhrVorname.IhrNachname@unibe.ch' is blocked because they are not a direct member of a group with access, nor had access directly assigned by an administrator. Please contact your administrator to assign access to this application."
If you get this notification, presumably you have forgotten to follow the instructions given in Step II. Please double-check before asking for further support.
What is SSO?
Single Sign-On (SSO) is a concept in information technology that lets users log in to different (web) applications and services with a single login, instead of having to log in for each application individually.
After successful login, the system behind SSO remembers your identity and automatically grants you access to other SSO-supported services as well. For example, you might only have to log in once to access emails, calendars, internal apps and other services simultaneously. Within an institution, such as the University of Bern, your credentials are automatically propagated to all other services and applications to which you have access.
Institutions revert to SSO in order to simplify user account management and increase the security of their IT systems.
